Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1909 Herman Rose paints very small, quiet, but vibrant cityscapes, landscapes and still-lifes, and sometimes portraits. His work has been extensively exhibited and he is the recipient of many honors and awards.
"Herman Rose...one of the foremost painter-laureates of New York."
"An obstinate, all-seeing devotion to New York scenes and characters turns this painter's realism into something transfiguring."
-N.Y. TIMES - 1962
"Herman Rose, whose inclusion among the "15 Americans" in the Museum of Modern Art Show, is a cause for congratulations... Rose's scenes are not impressions, they have a timeless look. His skyscrapers or little Brooklyn scenes might have been built before Columbus by some prophetic Pueblo tribes."
-ART NEWS - 1952
"The paintings of Herman Rose connect not only with Monet's primacy of color, but with Impressionist light as well...a cityscape of the upper East Side, full of such light as Monet or any other Impressionist would have been proud to have achieved."
