JANE BOLMEIER

When Jane Bolmeier moved to New York City during 1957, she created what Hans Hofmann described as "large, wild paintings." Based on a mastery of the Abstract Expressionistic idiom, these large works of the 50s and 60s are founded on a solid structure; yet they display spontaneity, freedom, and gestural qualities that speak for the commitment and realization of the artist. A selection of these works will be included in the exhibition, "Celebrating the Work of Jane Bolmeier," Westbeth Galleries, April 3-May 2, 1999. Also included will be a selection of recent works, which have a different voice, scale, and intent.

The impetus, for the 90s production, is nature. The artist's absorbing fondness for flowers and working out-of-doors is reflected in her recent series of drawings and small paintings. The oil pastels of the 90's were created for the most part at Saint Luke's Garden in the West Village and at Westbeth. In the small paintings, vivid hues play with soft washes, deeply colored gessoed backgrounds and a broad range of textures and movement.

Jane Bolmeier has exhibited her work in many solo and group exhibitions, including the Forum, Pleiades, and Westbeth Galleries in New York City and the Tirca Karlis Gallery in Provincetown, Ma. Jane earned a BA degree in Liberal Arts from Duke University; a MFA, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and an EdD, with an emphasis in Art Criticism, from New York University. She also studied with Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, Mass.
