Stewart Brisby
Poet/Writer



Stewart Brisby's poetry has appeared nationally in literary periodicals and anthologies. He is the recipient of a CAPS Fellowship Award for Poetry, author of two books of poetry entitled Urinating In The Pool and A Death In America, and author of a play entitled Pet Peeve, in which he also acted. The play was directed by Phyllis Chase and performed at the Raft Theatre on Theatre Row (West 42nd Street) in Manhattan for Double Image Theatre's 14th Annual Short Play Festival.

He is co-editor and publisher of the first national anthology of contemporary American prison writing titled Born Into A Felony, and editor of A Letter Full of Roses - an anthology of poetry from a creative writing workshop he taught at the Central New York Psychiatric Center in Marcy, New York while working for New York State Poets In The Schools.

Stewart studied acting under John Carroll and Anna Devere Smith at NYU and under Helen Warren Mayer and Ralph Marrero at Double Image Theatre in New York City. He appeared in "The Man Who Never Died" directed by Anne B. Wyma. In Syracuse, New York he appeared in the Salt City Playhouse production of "A Streetcar Named Desire," directed by Roy Delemos, and "The Duplex," directed by Anderson Johnson.

He is the Founder and former Executive Director of Hospital Audiences Inc. of Syracuse (HAI Syracuse), a non-profit agency that provided cultural resources for institutionalized and disadvantaged people in Syracuse, New York. While residing in Syracuse he was also a producer/director for Syracuse Cablesystems where he produced and directed numerous television programs and taught community residents to produce their own programs for Community Access Channels in both Syracuse and Canada.  

Stewart currently resides at Westbeth, the artist community in New York City's Greenwich Village and is the creator and webmaster of Westbeth's web site.
