Artist Biography

Jonathan Bauch’s body of work spans forty years. His early oil paintings evolved into aluminum and wire mesh constructed graphic shapes with kinetic lights. The current work features raw welded expressive free shapes in steel. He was artist in residence in welded sculpture during 2004-2005 in a program funded by the Abrons Art Center. He was guest curator, and exhibitor for Space in movement / Movement in space, presented at Westbeth Gallery (April 2004) a group exhibition, in which the seven sculptors and four painters investigated and created motion in the space of their work. Mr. Bauch was born in Brooklyn N Y, graduated of Parsons School of Design in1961, and studied painting at NYU, the School of Visual Arts, and sculpture at the Educational Alliance. A solo exhibition of his recent sculpture and drawings will be held at the Westbeth gallery in September 23—October 14, 2007.

Mr. Bauch has exhibited in the NY metro area and New England—some of his one-person shows of sculpture include exhibitions at The Bruce Museum, Greenwich, Conn.; The Becket Art Center, Becket, Ma; Mari Galleries, Mamaroneck, NY; Westbeth Gallery, NYC.
A partial list of group shows include The Museo De Art, Ponce, Puerto Rico; Warren Benedek Gallery, NYC; Westbeth Gallery, NYC; 380 Gallery, NYC; Aspects-Aegis Gallery, NYC; Judson Church NYC; Ward Nasse Gallery, NYC.

Dona Meilach comments on his early work—“Screen wire mesh, woven from a hard wire, still retains a softness and is worked into an illusion of undulating moire pat-terns by Jonathan Bauch, accompanied by and accomplished with colored lights.” —SOFT SCULPTURE, Crown Publishers

Artist’s Statement: I draw inspiration from the forms in nature as well as the physical properties of the metal itself. Further forms are enriched by fusion during welding. As I shape the pieces, each is transformed until it is an organic abstraction. The resulting sculpture is the outcome of these actions and an emotional record of the moment.

The current Spirit Series was created by a process of cutting and welding where the steel seems ripped into raw organic forms that interact with each other as they inhabit their space. I use the rhythm of positive and negative space to impart a sense of movement and to guide the flow of space in my sculpture. Each shapes’ effect on the spaces around it is examined, before it is welded into the composition.
